Choose between two Data Tool versions

They serve the same basic purpose, but their installation and data-retrieval methods differ. Choose the version that fits your environment.

Windows / macOS

Desktop version

Download and run Data Tool as a desktop app. An official Windows build and unnotarized macOS evaluation builds are available.

  • For Windows and macOS
  • Current distributed version: 1.0.1
  • Uses yfinance for data retrieval

Google Chrome

Chrome extension

Add Data Tool to Chrome from the Chrome Web Store. It sends requests directly from the browser to the data source.

  • Publicly available on the Chrome Web Store
  • Current public version: 1.0.0
  • Downloads CSV files from Chrome

Which version should I use?

  • On Windows, either version serves the same basic purpose. Choose the desktop version for a standalone app, or the Chrome extension if you prefer to work inside Chrome.
  • On a Mac, the Chrome extension is the first option to consider. The macOS desktop builds are unnotarized evaluation builds, so macOS may show a warning when you first launch them.
  • Both save Chart Playback-compatible daily CSV files, but because their data sources and retrieval methods differ, available data and results may not always be identical.

What both versions can do

  • Retrieve one instrument at a time by code or ticker
  • Select a start and end date
  • Save daily price data as CSV
  • Support Japanese stocks, U.S. stocks, crypto assets, futures and indexes, and foreign exchange

Data may not be available depending on the instrument, data-source status, or specification changes. Check dates, prices, missing values, and similar details before use.

Basic use

  1. Choose either the desktop version or the Chrome extension.
  2. Select a market type and enter an instrument code or ticker.
  3. Select a start and end date, then retrieve the price data.
  4. Save the daily data as a CSV file on your device.
  5. Use the saved CSV with Chart Playback when needed.

Relationship to Chart Playback

Data Tool is a related tool that helps prepare price CSV files used with Chart Playback. It operates separately from the Chart Playback web app and can also be used on its own.

It does not provide investment advice, trading recommendations, forecasts of future price movements, or guarantees of profits.
